It might seem that rented or laundered shop towels are environmentally preferable to disposable wipers, but research data compiled by Lockheed/Martin Environmental Services has shown that is not the case. After contracting Lockheed to perform a life-cycle analysis utilizing three parameters - energy used, water used, and waste produced - the US EPA concluded that there are environmental advantages to using disposable wipers over shop towels- advantages for you, your business and for preservation of earth's resources.

Here are the facts:
Disposable wipers made from recycled textiles are preferable to laundered shop towels across all life-cycle parameters. All other disposable wipers are preferable to laundered shop towels on two of three parameters. All types of disposable wipers use less water and generate less waste than laundered shop towels.

Solid waste studies cannot identify a percentage number that industrial wipers contribute to landfill space because the amount is so insignificant! Concentrated
contaminants (oils, greases, toxic heavy metals and hazardous solvents) from laundering rental towels are either transferred to sewer treatment plants in wastewater or concentrated in washer sludge that gets landfilled. The EPA report estimates that of 13 million pounds of pollutants discharged into sewers by laundries every year, more than 5 million pounds of toxins end up in surface water as a result of untreated pollutant pass through.
